Raw pet foods are foods designed for pets from which all or most of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients come from unprocessed, whole foods such as muscle & organ meats, fruits & vegetables.
It's hyperbole, but comparing raw pet foods to kibble diets is like comparing our own made-from-scratch, home-cooked meals to boxed potatoes, boxed eggs & powdered cheese.
Should I be concerned about the potential for bacteria in raw foods?
While raw foods (for pets & people) should always be handled properly, there is actually less reason to be concerned about bacteria in a raw pet food than in the meats you buy at the market for yourself. The FDA regulates raw pet foods and has a zero-tolerance policy regarding bacteria in pet food, which is a stricter standard than the USDA holds over our own meats!
One other important thing to consider is the digestive system of dogs & cats. Their system is designed to handle harmful bacteria which is why they can eat raw foods in the wild (who cooks the chickens for the wolves & bobcats?). Also, how many times has your dog eaten things from the trash can or even from the kitty litter box and been just fine ;-)
That being said, our digestive system isn't so built to defend against such bacteria so you want to make sure to properly handle all raw meats (for pets & people) and any items they come in contact with, such as the counter & food bowls.
I have a large dog and/or three cats. Is there an affordable way to feed raw pet foods?
Yes! If feeding a 100% raw pet food diet is not in your budget, you can still feed raw food as a portion of your pet's diet. To use hyperbole again, imagine that you eat fast food every day of your life. Wouldn't including a small portion of fresh fruits or vegetables with each meal bring you benefit? The same can be said of including a small portion of raw with your pet's kibble or canned food.
Since dogs & cats have been domesticated for thousands of years, haven't their digestive systems adapted to kibble?
No. While it's true that dogs & cats have been domesticated for thousands of years, we must realize that kibble has only been around for less than 100 years. Additionally, over the 15+ years that we have been feeding and recommending raw pet foods here at Pet Supply Warehouse, we have seen the healthiest results when raw foods are fed.
